AQUIJO - 282' (86M)

"Chariot of the Gods" Owner, Aquijo

At 86 meters Aquijo is groundbreaking and breathtaking. She is the culmination of the various individual wishes that defined the owner's dream and ultimately the yacht.

Aquijo was conceived as a genuine sailing yacht, suitable for long-range worldwide cruising and capable of complete independence at sear for extensive periods of time. In order to accomodate the owner's wish to circumnavigate the globe, Aquijo must be capable of rounding the Capes, in a storm, under sail, and in safety. This required particular attention to the balance between efficient hull form, powerful but manageable sail area, and stability across a range of conditions, as well as robust, powered control systems.

In order to allow access to many areas normally off-limits for a ship of this size, the boat is equipped with what is currently the world’s largest lifting keel and twin carbon rudders. These provide a low center of gravity for safety at sea and true sailing performance. The design of the rig was greatly influenced by the need for flexibility; balancing the boat across the entire wind range while reducing the enormous forces. We chose to install an even-height ketch rig. The sail plan is subdivided so that each sail produces forces of a similar magnitude, as well as keeping the number of sails and system parts to a minimum. This allows for quick sail setting and reducing, easy tacking, and fast, four-sail reaching for long distance sailing.
